Rita lived next door and was Val’s childhood best friend.They were practically inseparable. One thing Val always remembered, and retold on occasion, was that their favourite mischief was to hide in the coal shed at Val’s house eating runner beans they had pinched from her dad’s bean plants in the garden with Oxo cubes (slipped out of the pantry) and a slice of bread!
